Problem Solving

Every Friday I give students a Problem Solving Response. I grade them over the following things:

  • Notice/Wonders are listed

  • Question is restated in your own words (author's purpose)

  • Starting points are listed

  • Tools are identified

  • Models are present

  • Labels are correct

  • Calculations are correct

  • Solution is written in a sentence

  • Provided evidence-based explanations

  • Math vocabulary is included

The following prompt is an example of what I want to see and reads:

"Marion wants to rent a canoe to go on a lake. The cost is $2.00 plus $1.50 for each hour. Make a table showing how much it would cost to rent a canoe for 1,2,3,and 4 hours. Marion has $14.00. What is the greatest number of hours she can rent the canoe?"
